How To Find Your Default Gateway IP Address on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X

If you are familiar and pretty good with commands on Windows computer, finding out the IP address of your default gateway should take longer than a minute. However, The method of finding default gateway IP address I am about to share below will only work on the basic wireless or wired connections for home or small business networks. Larger business networks with multiple router connectivities are supposed to have multiple gateways as well. So, finding out the IP addresses of these gateways will be more complicated.

Find Default Gateway IP Address in Windows:

Step 1: First of all you will need to run your command as the system administrator. For this, you will need to go through Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command prompt (For older Windows versions such as XP, Vista, Windows 7). For Windows newer versions like 8,8.1, and 10, you may also take a shortcut, clicking on Windows icon, and then type “cmd” in the text box, and finally, press “Enter” key.

Step 2: Once the command prompt is opened, you will have to type the below command and run it by pressing “Enter” key.

ipconfig | findstr /i “Gateway”

You may also copy the above command and paste it into the command prompt.

Step 3: After running the command, the prompt will display the result like this

C:\Documents and Settings\administrator>ipconfig | findstr /i “Gateway”
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 181.138.1.1

In the above example, the IP address is identified at the end of the text as shown 181.138.1.1

Find Default Gateway IP Address in Linux:

Step 1: First of all, you will have to open a Terminal on Linux. It depends on the distribution, whether it is located at the top of your screen with menu items or at the bottom. You may take a route, click on “Applications” option, and then “System Tools”, finally the “Terminal.”

Step 2: Once the Terminal is opened, you need to type and run the command given below.

ip route | grep default

Or simply copy-paste the command into the terminal and make it run.

Step 3: Once it is run successfully, a result may display like this

joe$ ip route | grep default
default via 181.138.1.1 dev eth0 proto static

You may identify the IP address in the above example as 181.138.1.1.

Find Default Gateway IP Address in Mac OS X:

Step 1: Slightly similar to the Linux, you have to open your Mac Terminal app. In order to get this done, go to the “Finder” and then click on “Applications” followed by “Utilities.” Finally, click on “Terminal.app”.

Step 2: As the Terminal.app should be opened by now, you have to type the command given below and run it.

netstat -nr | grep default

Step 3: Once the command is executed, you will get to see a displayed result like below:

joe$ netstat -nr | grep default
default 181.138.1.1 UGSc 50 46 en1

The default gateway IP address can be spotted among the above-given example which is 181.138.1.1.
